  1. Look at it like skiing:

During the summer you can run down hills, do squat walks, do wall chairs, roller blade, walk on a tight rope, use an elliptical, and do high-rep cable triceps kickbacks to simulate using your ski poles.  However, in the winter YOU HAVE TO GET IN THE SNOW.

Do the same thing with martial arts:

While the others are correct that you will have to TRAIN WITH OTHERS to prepare for a fight, there are certainly a plethora of things you can do on your own to begin getting ready.  A lot of the mixed martial artists have really good books and videos that give you home training ideas.  It doesn't mean that you won't have to train with others to be effective, but I'm glad that you're getting started somewhere.  Also, I would refrain from ordering books and videos from the internet because of the scammers.  Checkout some of the martial arts magazines where you'll be more likely to find more legitimate advertisers

  2. you cant truely learn martial arts from books or videos.

  3. Well I'm a practicing martial artist in the art of Tae Ju Kwon and Tae Kwon Do, though I am just a yellow belt, I believe that I answer this question. When I was way younger, I purchased a book on learning Karate. Know back then I felt like I was learning something, but know I know that I was learning nothing. Watching videos or reading books on martial arts can neneverhelp one achieve the motivation that someone does when he is experiencing his teaching up close.

If you are truly interested in self-defence (or just plain kicking ***) then I highly recommend that you sign up for martial arts.

p.s. Tekken is awesome, Baek Doo San is my favorite! XD

  4. impossible to teach from the books

the only thing they are good for is research.

there is no quick path to learning self defence.

it sounds like you cant be assed to do some exercise

  5. I'M GOING TO SAY THIS ONE TIME, NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WATCH YOUTUBE MMA MOVES OR WHAT HAVE YOU, YOU CAN'T TRUELY LEARN A MARTIAL ART ON THE INTERNET, YOU CAN STUDY IT LIKE SAY A COACH WOULD IN FOOTBALL, BUT JUST CAUSE YOU LEARN WHAT THE OTHER TEAMS DOING DON'T MEAN YOU CAN RUN OUT AND SCORE A TOUCHDOWN, IF YOU WAS JUST PRACTICING MOVES BY YOURSELF THEN WHO ARE YOU PRACTICING ON? OH WAIT DON'T ANSWER THAT.

  6. of course there is you all dont no anything if u cant teach your self then how was the martial art created?

  7. dude, there is NO WAY what so ever you can teach your self any martial art by watching movies, ready books, and especially playing video games. If you really want to learn martial arts you are absolutely going to have to go to a gym and put alot of hard work and effort into it, if you cant commit to that martial arts are not for you. Don't take tae kwon do and don't follow the stigma of only jui jitsu and muay thai work because there are dozens of systems just like them.

  8. Didn't you learn anything from the first 'Karate Kid' film?  You can't learn martial arts on your own from a book.  Without a trained expert to monitor your execution, you'll never know if you are actually doing it correctly.

You may think you are.  But you're no expert and cannot judge for yourself.  You need a trained, impartial eye to guide your progress.

So after you sign up to train in a class or privately under a master, go rent 'Karate Kid.'

  9. Another person who is trying to bring video games into real life, sorry martial arts were not developed over night, it took thousands of years to perfect.

  10. when I was 17 I saw "Enter the Dragon" on my new VCR and I slow-motioned Bruce Lee about 135 times and taught myself how to swing, spin and twirl Nunchaku (most people call them numchuks) It was a painful and lengthy process but I eventually got good enough to impress anyone who tried to mess with me. Best of luck to you and remember that PERSEVERANCE is your best friend in this type of endeavor.

  11. Yes, you are on the right path.

The best martial art masters and fighters are self-taught from video games.

    Wait.........

  12. A real martial arts style is a science based on the laws of physics. Could imitating a movie help you develop ballance, or timing, or know fighting distance.  Do you know what range you should be in against opponants of various size's or different fighting skills, like a boxer, kicker, or wrestler.  What kind of range would you fight in for each of these.  Being in a class and learing from a instructor, and practicing could help you develop these things. Otherwise you are just like a parot learning to speak a few people words thinking he is a human.

  13. To be self taught is to learn by trial and error.

Better and easier to be taught by someone with knowledge in which you wish to learn.

    Best wishes :)***

  14. You can't know if its effective if you don't get proper training.

  15. he who teaches himself/herself martial arts, has a fool for a teacher.
