Question:

Self-tour of Tulum Mayan Ruins from Cozumel?

We would like to see the Tulum Mayan Ruins as one of our cruise excursions in Cozumel. We will be in Cozumel for 9 hours and I wonder what is the best way to get to the ruins without having to go through the cruise excursions as they charge an arm and leg. Any ideas?

  1. First you have to get from Cozumel to the mainland.   Click the first link for the ferry schedule.  The you have to get from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.  Probably the quickest and easiest way is by taxi, like the other guy said.  Some taxi drivers will act as a guide for a fee.  Ask around in Playa del Carmen.

Tulum is one of the smallest Maya sites and it won't take long to see all of it.  If you have time,  have the cabbie take you to Coba--a larger and more interesting site.

  2. You might try hiring a taxi, settle on the fare beforehand. He should wait for you. We were just in the Yucatan and I believe the ticket price was $75 per person.  The tour group price might seem better once you factor that in with the taxi fare.

We didn't tour it as there were 7 of us and we just felt it was too pricey. Its appeal is the location next to the ocean..Very scenic.

  3. I would take the tour excursion from the trip. If you are delayed for any reason, the ship will wait for you. If you do this on your own and get delayed, you will have to find your own way to the next port. Not worth it.

FYI, the ferry to Playa del Carmen is a 45 minutes ferry ride. The cost is $11 a person one way.
