Selkies....?

Does anyone know anything about Selkies? I first read about them in Seven Tears into the Sea (by Terri Farley. I wish she would make a new book along the same lines!). Especially anything really old & celtic?

They're supposedly a sea dwelling race of people, who spend a good part of their time in the forms of seals. The more famous tails are similar to those of the mermaids. A selkie woman will fall asleep on a rock face, shedding her seal skin (before or after the fact I don't know.) A young fisherman comes across her sleaping form and is entranced. Before she can wake, he steals her seal skin.(Without which she cannot transform. ) She lives with him, likely producing a child while doing so. But, sooner or later, she finds her skin and escapes to the sea-taking the child with her- never to be seen again.

selkies are a lot like werewolves as they are either human or in the shape of a seal,but they are part of faery or of the sidhe court.they are guardians and watchers of the seas.
