Question:

Selling NHL cards on ebay? (Please read details)?

I have a bunch of NHL cards that I want to sell on ebay. My question, though, is if I have cards from 2002-2003, would the best teams from that year sell better, or the best teams of this year? Does that make sense? Like, for example, in 2002-2003, the Ottawa Senators were #1 in conference in their division...so would my 2002-2003 Senators cards sell better than, say, my 2002-2003 Detroit Red Wings cards, who are #1 this year in their division? I really hope that makes sense...

  1. It depends. The most best way is to sell cards of higher value individually. Others I would group into lots by team or player. I think that 02/03 Dertroit cards would sell better if the players on the card are still on the team.

  2. I collect sport cards not so much for the love of it but purely for the monetary value. I have to admit though it has kind of grown on me and it's fun scoring a great find at a great deal. I pick up a lot on eBay. What I know for sure is collectors know the value of what you have and they know the most they are willing to pay. I recommend you either look your cards up on becketts web site ( best to subscribe ) or have a collector look at them and give you an idea of what you have. Then you can decide how you want to place them for sale on eBay.

  3. Not necessarily. It's still a rookie card driven industry, with Nash, Zetterberg, and Spezza being the most valuable ones of that year, followed by players like Huet and Miller. If you were putting together team sets and included these cards in the sets, then they would be better sellers than others, because of those RC's.  Game-used or auto inserts would depend on the player, not the team.

That being said, I think that a team winning a Cup would cause more of a sale increase than winning a conference. So this year people would have been looking for RedWings items rather than Ottawa. Everybody loves a winner!.

  4. I would pull all of the key rookies and sell them, and sell the remainder in team lots.

  5. Base set cards aren't worth much at all since the early 90's when all the new card companies came out.  So either way you'll probably end up with the same amount, within a couple of dollars unless you have something special.  But then if you have something special you'll get good money for it no matter how good the team is or was back then.  As for the Beckett value a good rule is you'll get about 10% Beckett value on eBay.  I don't buy anything over 10% of the Beckett value and I don't see much stuff go over that mark.
