Question:

Selling a Civic at Carmax

I'm looking to sell my 1998 civic LX but I'm not too sure if Carmax would be the best place to do it. The car has 196000 miles on it and it needs a little paint work. Aside from that the car's running in excellent condition. The car is all paid off and I have the title. Realistically, how much would I expect to get if I sold it to the Carmax.

  1. dealerships will never give you what the car is worth (remember they need to resale it, so they can't sell a car that they want to OFFER to a customer at what its worth, and to make a profit, they have to pay you less for it).

Private sell it, through your local classifieds, craigslist, or Cars.com

You will end up with more money that you can use toward your down payment of a new or another used car.

  2. I've been looking for a car to buy so i've been wondering how i knew what a good price was too and my grandma told me about this "blue book" that gives you a really good idea.  if you go to http://www.kbb.com/ and enter all the information it should let you know. good luck!

  3. They would give you just under what they would expect to sell it at auction.

Given that it needs paint work, I would guess $300-$500.

Go to CarMax, see what they say and then sell it on your own for $500 more.

These cars get good mileage, are reliable, and are in high demand right now.
