I'm selling a boat to someone from Canada and I want to make sure everything goes smoothly. I own the boat and trailer outright and can sign it over on this end but what will the buyer need to have/do to get it over to the Canadian side?

  1. In Canada, any boat that is powered by a motor more than 10 HP, needs to be licenced or registered.  If you have a licence number on the bow of your boat, you should also have the licence form that you would have signed when you bought it.  The buyer in Canada will need to have a copy of that form, the bill of sale and your contact information in order to make the necessary licence transfer.

It's hard to say what "Free Trade" has to say about this, so a quick call to Canada Customs would be a good idea.  As far as any additional taxes/tariffs  go, that will become the responsibility of the purchaser.

  2. canada would be the place to go for that info

i am guess ing that a couple  of professional appraissals may be needed to substantiate that the  selling price is in the  ball park of the actual retail value.

as i am quite  sure that a declaration  of purchase and tax will need to be pdat the border

an easier way to handle it may be you  tow the boat up and make the transaction up there

is it a  boat small enough to down the hiway on a trailer ?

  3. OK, this is my answer in reverse. My brother bought a boat from Canada. They gave him all the papers and he just took them down in his State (Texas) just like you would any boat and registered it. I thinking because of the "Fair Trade" agreement he not have to pay any extra taxes, maybe what regular for any registration. I would have to ask him to be sure on that tax part. But, for him it was nothing different than buying a boat in Arkansas and registering it in Texas.

It may work different for the guy in Canada. But, your part will be to give him all the necessary signed papers. I would probably give a Work and Home phone in case Canada or the buyer need to contact me for any additional information.
