Question:

Selling a car in Tennessee without title, using bill of sale?

I purchased a car from a mechanic shop about a year ago and have my original bill of sale and the giant stack of paperwork in order to have the car titled to me, however I plan on selling the car to someone else within a month or so, so can I just use a bill of sale and turn over all of the paperwork to the buyer?

It seems kind of redundant for me to have to register and title the car in my name and then turn around and have someone else do it in theirs.

Serious answers only, please.

  1. i do it all the time  it isnt hard  you can download the forms from the state forms or just hand over what you have  it really doesnt matter  who signs the bill of sale  as long as one of them has the last owners siginuture on it

i got a car once with 4 bills of sale i threw away all of them but the first one it went through ok

  2. If the back of the title has been assigned to you then you need a notary to sign an error of assignment form to change it to the new customer. Otherwise pay the taxes and transfer it as you agreed to a year ago.

What used to be easy is not the case now this is a revenue source for the state and they guard it. The age of computers make their job much easier to keep up with how often a car has been registered and sat.
