Question:

Selling a computer with music files?

I have a computer with about 7,000 songs on it. All of which are extremely high quality (personal rips) and perhaps valuable. My question is if I were to sell my computer on ebay, would I be able to list my music as a selling point? Also is it illegal to leave all of my music on the computer when it is sold?

  1. Yes it is illegal to sell the PC with the music on it, especially as a selling point as that may drive the price up, you have made copies of your music, but since they are for person use that is a legal gray area, however sending the PC to others with these files, while retaining them yourself on another PC is illegal, if you send all the CDs with, then it is legal, or if they were itunes purchases and you transferred them.

It is probably better to clean reformat your PC anyway if you have an XP install disk.

  2. I wouldn't suggest listing them, because RIAA could decide to get you for "Reselling music without license/permission/consent etc."

  3. not exactly something you want to post an an extra, seeing as selling ripped music is illegal

depending on copyright laws in your area, having them on your computer might even be illegal aswell

your best bet is to just get rid of them, to avoid any trouble

  4. Yes, it IS illegal.  You're exactly right, YOU own the CDs.  The person buying it doesn't.  Hence, illegal.
