Selling food on small scale

Question

I am wondering if it is legal to put jars of homemade jam outside my house and ask for donations to be given. My concern is whether it is legal to due to health and safety.

A lot of people do that where I live, having yard sales and selling homemade canned goods, pickles, or baked goods.  If you're concerned about it contact your city hall and ask them if it's ok.
