Question:

Selling my horse?

How much could I get for this horse:

beautiful 3 yr old palomino gelding, quarter horse, small/medium height, friendly, trained and ridden when he was 2 but has been at pasture for about 6 months now

I want to know how much I could sell him for. I used to be able to ride him a lot, but I have realized that I don't have enough time to spend with this youngster to make him into a good horse.

I want to sell him and maybe buy an older, more broke horse: like one that has gotten too old for someone to show, but they want him to go to a good home. It just needs to be well broke for arena or trail riding. nothing fancy- but with a good attitude >How much do you think I could buy a horse like that for?

Thanks!

  1. probably around 3,000, if he has someone in his pedigree like Impressive then you can get more. If his parents aren't registered then between 1,000-2,000.

  2. i would ssay 1500 to 2000

  3. Your horse, based on what you told me, would probably sell around 1000.  If you want a nice dead-broke horse, then I recommend investing 2-3000 dollars.  That is if you don't want anything special.  You can get some really nice horses on Horseville, horsetopia, or equinehits.  You can also try a site called Craigslist in the for sale general section.

  4. Sadly I would say between 300.00 and 1000.00 depending on your area....

As for a horse to buy you can always try a rescue like www.saddlebredrescue.com

  5. A grade (unregistered) horse as you describe probably isn't worth more than $1000 if you're lucky in the northern mid-west.

A 3 year old is still very young mentally - so should be considered un-started if he's only been ridden a bit at 2 and not since.

Horses around here, well broke and registered at 5-8 years are bringing maybe $3000-$5000.

This is why I've decided to NOT sell the beautiful, triple registered dun filly I foaled last year.

  6. It honestly depends on where you live. For instance, I live in Calgary, AB and if you drive out a little ways, almost everyone owns a horse and has room for more -- so there's high demand for great new prospects, especially QH.

A young, palomino gelding that's been trained/ridden and has a good temperament is likely to go for a fair amount. Maybe 2,000-4,000, give or take, and without me having any knowledge of his bloodlines?

Google up some horse trader/selling websites in your area. There are a lot for almost everywhere, so you're sure to find some animals to compare to.

  7. why are you riding your horse at 2? ....and riding him a LOT???? he is a baby at 2!!

  8. In our area, young greenbroke horses that are not registered aren't bringing a lot of money....  Some are being advertised for as little as $350.  On Craigslist recently there was an older bombproof gelding with saddle, bridle, pad, and half ton of hay for $1000.  So set your $ limit and start looking at the horse sites in your area.  That will give you the best idea of what you might have to pay and what your horse is worth.
