I got sky+ in last june (june 2007) and the i got pissed off with their service (no satellite signal is being received) and i got "there is a technical fault with this channel, please try again later" every time i turned the box on in the morning, so i never paid them and they turned me off, If i was to sell it on ebay would the person who bought it be able to use it (by phoning sky and getting their card no to work with that boxes s/n), or would they have to wait till my contract was canceled?, also would it be the same for the standard boxes?

Thanks

  1. sounds like a faulty L.N.B.  they are cheap to buy , and since yours is under a year old should be replaced under guarantee.  as sky subsidies the installation and cost or the equipment i would wait a bit before trying to sell it. just in case they come to reclaim the equipment.if you sell for £20 or £30 - replacement boxes can cost up to £200. you could be out of pocket. sorry

  2. The Sky box is normally yours to keep once installed and seperate from your contract. This is why you have to pay for repairs once out of warranty, therefore you are normally free to sell the box at any time, but you will still be tied to any contract with sky even if you have no way to view the programmes!

Ensure you keep the viewing card safe as it belongs to sky, someone might also be able to use it to watch expensive pay per view on your account and Sky may ask for its return and charge you if you fail to.

To test the box check if you can get BBC1 or Sky News without the card inserted. If you get no signal, it could be the  dish alignment or LNB/cabling. You might be able to try the box on a friends dish to confirm this.

Someone purchasing your box would not have to wait until your contract ended. They could use their existing Sky subscription (although they would normally need to inform Sky of the new box to enable premium channels and recording), or they could take out a new subscription as long as the box is in working order.
