I need a barrel/game horse. We found two we are interested in.

i have a blm mustang that i've had 4 years. we have another but hes my moms horse. Anyway we can't afford a third horse and i just CAN'T give my boy up. Hes like my best friend, i mean theres so much i can say hes my life. It would literally rip me apart to sell him.

Can someone tell some stories about when they sold? I dont think i can sell him, but did you regret it or do you still think about it from this day?

  1. I've broken my heart over selling so many great horses, but at the end of the day is it sentiment that's just keeping you from selling him. I got so sentimental about 4 horses that i had to sell, because I bought them for cutting and rodeo and they just didn;t have the right stuff, they were more western pleasure kinds horses. but they were great and I loved them and it's just ridiculous to keep horses that are no good to you sitting out in the back paddock, losing top line and not getting the work and attention they deserve. All my horses got sold to really great western pleasure and trail homes, I was very particular about the people i sold them to, but i knew it was the right thing to do. If this gaming thing is just a phase then i would seriously consider if selling your boy is the way to go, but if it's seriously where you want your horse career to go then maybe giving him up to a home that more suits his capabilities would be better. because at the end of the day, unless the horse is really a part of you then this is probably just a bit of sentimentality, which is fine and good, but you have to bring logic and rationality into this picture as well. just really sit downand examine it, live with the decision of selling him for a week and id there's any doubt at the end, it's probably for the best that you keep him or lease him out. because the only time i got doubtful was the only time i still regret selling that horse, and believe I will always kick myself for selling her...be careful and make the right decision.

  2. Selling horses is always hard - particularly if you're like me, and get quite emotionally involved. I even shed a tear for a horse I'd wanted to sell a couple of months after buying him!

I don't think there is ever an "easy" selling situation, whatever your reasons. I've never regretted a sale; I've regretted situations leading to sales, but the sale itself has always been for reasons I've been able to stick up for years down the line. Choosing the best home is very important - visit where the horse will be going if you want, and talk to all prospective buyers about what your horse is like and what you want for him.

But if you don't think you can sell him - don't!

  3. I've sold a couple horses that I never thought I would. The last one I sold to a very nice beginner rider. A few months ago she invited me to come see him. She absolutely loves him and appreciates him more than we ever did. He is spoiled, fat, and happy! He has a better life with someone who really wants and uses him and appreciated him for all he is.
