Semeen to come up with improved effort in NGK Spark Plugs Handicap at Newmarket
Semeen showed definite promise on his debut at Sandown before finding a few excuses on previous two occasions. Luca Cumani’s 3-year-old colt is not exposed in the handicap company, and can be trusted in the Class 5 NGK Spark Plugs Handicap, taking place
at Newmarket on Friday, August 17th.
Semeen was an unlucky loser last time. In the hands of Kieren Fallon, he chased the leaders early on, but could not maintain the standards thereafter. He was soon beaten and as a result, finished sixth behind Surprise Moment in the ITM Promoting Irish Bloodstock
Maiden Stakes at Windsor.
Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the son of Dubawi is making his handicap debut with plenty of determination. Thus, he can be preferred over Spey Song, who is likely to struggle on Newmarket’s hard surface.
James Bethell’s charge was well beaten by Candycakes at the end of last month. The Vindis Group Fillies' Handicap saw her taking keen hold early on.
Although she ran well in the hands of Frankie Dettori, it was not possible for her to challenge the winner. As a result, she fell second by two and a half lengths. The filly is facing a lot tougher opposition this time, and one must think twice before putting
money on her.
Calculated Risk, on the other hand, looks to be the one to keep an eye on. After suffering a couple of terrible defeats, the Willie Musson-trained managed to break the shackles, as he sealed a comfortable win at Doncaster last month. It was certainly a brilliant
show by the 7-2 joint favourite, who did not lose his confidence despite not getting off to a fine start.
An outstanding finish guided him to an easy 3½-length victory. After such a cosy success, the 3-year-old will look to continue in the same fashion in today’s 1m2f meeting, which will be kicked off at 19:35 GMT. Alongside the aforementioned trio, 17 runners
will be aiming for a cash prize worth £2,588.
A close clash between Calculated Risk and Semeen is on the cards. The former is in better shape, but Semeen is more than capable of taking the game away from him. Good luck to all the runners.
