Hey all, my fiance has had a s***n count and it is only showing 44% mobility. Which means 56% is no good right?

We have been TTC for 10 months....i'm starting to think it's him that could have the problem...... :-(

Luckily we are seeing a fertility doctor on the 3rd Sept, so I will ask her ALL about it but I just wanted to hear if anyone on here can give me some advice on it? I have him on Zinc and all the vits he needs and he gace up smoking 2 months ago.....

Anyone here know anything about this?

Many thanks x*x

  1. You are exactly right, if he has 44% motility that means that 44 % of them are right and swimming correctly and the right direction, the other 56 % are either not swimming at all or they are going in the wrong direction etc.  By what you have said I would say that you are right and it is your partner that has the problem that is affecting your chance of conceiving.

WELL DONE on him giving up smoking and taking zinc etc this should help a wee bit.  But I really wouldnt worry as you have an appointment with a specialist am sure that they will give you the best advice on how to conceive and offer you the best treatment in order to allow this to happen.

    Good Luck with your appointment

  2. There are two different criteria for what is considered a normal sperm count.  One is stricter then the other.  Different doctors use different criteria.  The total number of sperm is important as well.  (For example, 44% out of a sperm count of 80 million is much better than 44% out of 20 million sperm count.)  Regardless, it only takes one good sperm to make a baby.  I have a friend who's husband suffered an injury as a child.  Due to the injury, he has very low sperm count --consistently under 5 million and they have 4 children (naturally).

    Normal sperm count:

    Normal results:

s***n volume: 1.0–6.5 milliliters (mL) per ejaculation

Liquefaction time: Less than 60 minutes

Sperm count: 20–150 million sperm per milliliter (mL)

Sperm shape (morphology): At least 70% of the sperm have normal shape and structure.

Sperm movement (motility): At least 60% of the sperm show normal forward movement. At least 8 million sperm per milliliter (mL) show normal forward movement.

    s***n pH: s***n pH of 7.1–8.0

White blood cells: No white blood cells or bacteria are detected.

Fructose level: 300 milligrams (mg) of fructose per 100 milliliters (mL) of ejaculate

The World Health Organisation provides a definition of a 'normal' sperm count:

-the concentration of spermatozoa should be at least 20 million per ml.

-the total volume of s***n should be at least 2ml.

-the total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.

-at least 75 per cent of the spermatozoa should be alive (it is normal for up to 25 per cent to be dead).

-at least 30 per cent of the spermatozoa should be of normal shape and form.

-at least 25 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming with rapid forward movement.

-at least 50 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming forward, even if only sluggishly.

It is quite surprising how many dead and abnormal sperm can be present in a 'normal' sample.

  3. If he's not already, make sure he's wearing the boxers and NOT the tighty whities.

If he is wearing the tight underware, the looseness of the boxers should improve his counts.  However, anything he does to improve things (boxers, quit smoking, no hot tubs, etc) will take three months to have an impact (because that's how long it takes those swimmers to develope).
