Question:

Semi-Final Match Ups?

I never could quite understand this.

What is the system for matching up players in brackets?

My best exampe is this:

Right now, the tournament in Monte-Carlo is going on on the ATP tour. Federer, the #1 seed, made it to the semi-finals. Davydenko, the #4 seed, made it to the semis also. Now, if Nadal and Djokovic, the respective #2 & #3 seeds, make it to the semi-finals, the top four seeds will be in the semi-finals.

When you look at the draws though, the #1 seed won't face the #4 seed in the semis.

I always thought that when you get to the semi-finals in that case, the #1 seed will always face the #4 seed and the #2 seed will always face the #3. Does anyone know why this isn't the case?

  1. i dont know either... but i think it depends what brackets players are put... in this case. the 1st and 3rd seed are on the left side of the draw while the 2nd and 4th seed are on the right... so that's why on the final 4, 1st seed will play against the 3rd seed.. and the same thing on the 2nd and 4th seed...

  2. hhahaha i just asked this kind of question 3 hours ago.

i noticed this long ago but it really affected me when it happened again in AO, Federer (seeded 1st) faced Djokovic (seeded 3rd) in the semis. i thought it was going to be 1vs4...

  3. Other than 1 and 2, the rankings are interchangable, which is why they always talk about the "draws" sort of like the Nba draft lottery - set at probabilities and then randomly generated by computers

  4. I never understood why either, but the ATP and WTA formula for seeding doesn't have a strict bracket assignment for certain seeds.

Seeds 1 and 2 are on opposite ends of a pro draw.  Then, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 are interchangeable.

The women's draws get worse, as seeds 9-16 could all fall in any of those 8 spots.  The men continue with the pattern of every 2 being interchangeable.

  5. I was thinking the same thing.

Roger and Djoko have tougher runs, and Nadal is breezing through, so the match ups seem odd.

  6. Im not to sure to be honest, ive never really understood the whole ``draw`` thing, i get confused easily about this, but good question lets hope you get some decent answers :)
