Semi final flyweight bout between Ian McCall and Demetrius Johnson ends in majority draw – UFC news
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) conducted the semi finals of the flyweight championship on its UFC on FX2 pay-per-view, which had Demetrius Johnson and Ian McCall bout end in a controversy and eventually an overall majority draw decision.
The special edition was the second episode on FX channel at the Allphones Arena situated in Sydney, Australia. The pay-per-view was headlined by the non-title brawl between Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann.
UFC has recently inducted the flyweight division among its ranks and in order to determine the champion of the division, the promotion had been conducting preliminary bouts. On March 3, 2012 in Australia, two bouts were held in order to determine the two
finalists of the final bout for the flyweight title.
The second engagement was between Joseph Benavidez and Yasuhiro Urushitani. The bout was won by Joseph in a knockout that helped him win the ‘knockout of the night’ award. The bout between Johnson and McCall was meant to find Joseph’s opponent but unfortunately
chaos happened and later on the bout was denoted as a ‘majority draw’.
Demetrius, infamous as the ‘Mighty Mouse’, was entering in his career’s 17th bout. He has won a total 14 bouts and lost just two. The 25-year-old is a ground player since he has collected six of his wins by submission, three by knockout, and five by either
split or unanimous decision.
The young American brawler was entering the octagon after collecting a unanimous loss from Dominick Cruz. Ian, on the contrary, was entering the ring to mark his UFC debut.
McCall has been in a total 13 brawls and has come out victorious in 11. He has collected four of his wins by knockout, three by submission, and another four by decision. The 27-year-old ‘Uncle Creepy’ was on a four-bout win streak and had been fighting successfully
in ‘Tachi Palace Fights’ promotion.
Both men put up a great bout so much so that later on the duo was conferred the ‘Fight of the night’ honour. Initially the bout was awarded to Johnson via majority decision but later on, since the score were 29-28, 29-29 and 29-28, the bout was denoted as
a split decision in Demetrius favour.
Interestingly the decision was again, after careful correction, converted to majority draw and all this decision shifting occurred due to ‘tabulation error’, a matter that easily enraged UFC President Dana White who afterwards not only confirmed the news
but said that the rematch might take place any time in April.
Johnson, the number one flyweight in the world, commented that he did win at least the first two rounds, “I felt I won the first two rounds. That last round he came on strong and put it on me, but yeah, I thought I won the first two.”
