Semi-finalists decided in hollow waves at ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica Pro – Surfing news
Australia’s Anthony Walsh, Uruguay’s Marco Giorgi, Peru’s Gabriel Villaran and his fellow countryperson Alvaro Malpartida walked away victorious from their respective quarter-final heats at the Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) 3-Star Maui and Sons
Arica Pro presented by Monster Energy and Sony, which continued at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Saturday, June 15, 2013.
The conditions on what was expected to be the final day of the competition turned out to be pretty exciting, as the four-to-six foot waves offered plenty of juice for the ambitious surfers to prove their mettle and put their skills on display.
The proceedings of the day kicked-off with Walsh taking on Brazil’s Yan Daberkow in the first quarter-final. Both the surfers were expected to put up a strong fight to ensure their survival in the contention for the event title.
Once the dust settled, however, it was Walsh who stood victorious, courtesy of his heat-total of 12.34 points against his rival’s two-wave total of 12.00 points.
The next heat pitted Villaran against his compatriot Martin Jeri. Despite belonging to the same country, the encounter was not expected to show even a glimpse of friendliness or mercy.
That is exactly how the proceedings of the heat went, with Villaran putting on a rampaging performance to strip his rival of all hope of victory.
Grabbing a couple of solid scores off his business waves, he ended up with a heat-total of 16.43 points. Jeri, on the other hand, finished with a heat-total of 7.37 points. The dismal performance forced him to surrender victory and thus the semi-final spot
to his rival.
The third heat saw Giorgi lock horns with local talent Manuel Selman in the battle for a place in the semi-final.
The crowd were treating to an exquisite performance, though the person responsible for it was not quite whom they were cheering for.
Giorgi made some excellent wave selections to get to a heat-total of 15.40 points and cement his chances of clinching the win.
Despite his local knowledge of the waves, Selman failed to make any solid impact and ended up succumbing to his rival after finishing with a heat-total of 10.50 points. As a result, the last-remaining Chilean surfer in contention for the event title ended
up getting eliminated.
Malpartida took on Brazil’s Igor Moraes in the fourth heat of the quarter-finals.
The Peruvian surfer stole the show in the opening minutes of the heat. Navigating his way through the sea, he grabbed himself a couple of great waves to register a heat-total of 18.07 points.
Moraes failed to find his rhythm throughout the course of the heat and eventually finished with a heat-total of 9.44 points, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
