Question:

Semi formal wedding, do I wear an ill fitting suit or settle on the vest?

So, I'm a dorming college student, and I haven't really had the need to wear a suit in a while. I am going to a semi formal wedding tomorrow in the daytime, in fact it's a reception, I believe the ceremony is private, and am conflicted on what to do. The couple are Chinese and non-religious, it's not exactly traditional I don't believe, but I wanted to mention that so you know it's not in a cathedral or something.

I really believe it's beyond subjective and the jacket portion of my suit makes me look bad. The shoulder portion is especially unflattering and is way too low and sharp. Since it's a semi formal, I am thinking I should just go with the vest, shirt, and tie portion of my suit and leave the jacket behind. I think it looks stylish, however, I have always subscribed to the better to overdress than underdress view, so I would like to know your opinions.

  1. If it's semi-formal you could get away with the vest and a tie. as long as you look good.

  2. If it's semi-formal then no jacket will be fine, especially if you are still wearing a shirt and tie.

You could always take the jacket with you just in case you feel a bit out of place or under-dressed.

    Your outfit sounds nice =)

  3. Go with the vest, shirt and tie and leave the jacket.  Go with what looks best and what you are comfortable with.  If the jacket looks bad then skip it!  You'll be fine, a vest and tie looks nice enough.

  4. thats fine, forget the jaket if you look bad in it. ASll the guys will be taking off their jakets at the reception any way. thats what they do!

  5. You could always take the jacket with you and put it on if you feel underdressed without it. Or maybe (I might be going out on a limb here) you might have a nice polo shirt to wear with the pants, or khakis?? Hope this helps.

  6. I agree with this

I have always subscribed to the better to overdress than underdress view

But it is overruled by the; better to be slightly underdressed than badly dressed
