Question:

Semi-western or Eastern Forehand?

Recently, I had a wrist injury (TFCC tear). Most likely it was due to using bad technique (too much wrist; windshield wiper motion) on the semi-western forehand grip. Now that my wrist is feeling better and I'm ready to play again, should I get lessons to correct my technique, or stick with the eastern forehand?

Before I switched from the eastern to semi-western, my arm and wrist were fine, but I was noticing a lot of long balls (and they go all the way up in the air too). I decided to switch to semi western, as it adds more spin. Any tips on how to keep the balls from going long with the eastern, or is semi-western my best shot?

  1. Unless you're a high school or collegiate player and in good shape, stay away from the eastern forehand, players can generate more power and control using more of a western grip, however if you're set on an eastern forehand  a good way to make it a weapon is to develop significant topspin on all the shots you make with it.

  2. semi western is ususally the best grip to give you the most margin of error with spin and stuff. maybe try to take it inbetween an eastern and a semi western. also try to keep your wrist firm and to not snap it when you are hitting ground strokes. snapping your wrist is only good when you are serving and not for groundstrokes.
