  1. Oh come on, telegrams died out years ago, whether to a ship or land!

All cruise ships today have Inmarsat numbers, so if you  ask the cruise line, they'll tell you the ship's number. Then you can simply phone or fax.

If you would prefer to do something different from simply speaking to Mom, then if you ask for on-board reception and ask them very nicely, they may even write a suitable card and deliver it to the cabin for you.

  2. Hi

Depending on which ship she is on, most cruise companies have interactive email systems in the cabins, each passenger will have a private email address that the guest can check in their own cabin on their TV.

Best thing to do is phone the cruise company on land and ask them for the email address and fax number of the ship. Make sure you know the exact ship as there are often a few ships in one company!

This will be received at the reception who will deliver to your mums cabin. Just put on the top her name and cabin number if you have it and when it is to be delivered for.

    Hope this helps

  3. Wow. Very, very few telegrams are sent anymore. But if you are determined, it is possible.

In keeping with maritime safety law, all ships DO carry a telex.  They're one of the only places anymore that do.

iTelegram took over telegrams from Western Union in 2006.  Contact them for information and pricing:

And of course check with the cruise line for the telex number, pricing, etc.  It may be hard to find someone who knows, but keep asking.

FYI, it may be cheaper and easier to send your mother a bottle of nice champagne with a note....

  4. You can still send a telegram from the UK to international destinations, although I am not sure if that includes ships in transit. The cost is 0.96p per word, including address etc: and you can do it on-line.

There is an email contact address, were you can ask any questions you have.

  5. Ships dont have the facilities for telgrams anymore! (or shall we say they have ONE aboard but in the bridge as according to law,,but in recpetion no - so it wont be dealt with straight away,,and telegrams are more expensive as you pay per word as apposed to a fax which is per page).. Send her a fax - thats the most common way to send someone a message on a ship (only other way is email, phoning or a letter to one of the ports to be forwarded to the ship)..You can even fax through your internet line these days,,all you have to do when you write is put her cabin number on the top and the reception staff will  it gets to her room straight away...You could also arrange a bunch of flowers or chocolates (or champagne) to be sent to her room throught the company for the occasion
