and text4free.net does not work

SMS: email to cell phones

You can send email to a cell phone using text messaging or SMS (short message service). SMS messages can be up to 160 character including the email address.

Each carrier has their own email addressing format but in general it's area code + phone number at carrier.com, for example [e-mail] for T-Mobile customers. Click on the carrier's name in the list below to navigate to their web interface (except Cingular & Virgin Mobile).

Mobile phones in North America generally already have an email address which takes the form of :

mobile phone number@carrier email address

e.g. [e-mail]

Where 1234567891 =10 digit mobile phone number and

tmomail.net = carrier email address (T mobile).

  

     In order to send to the cell phone you simply create an email (text not HTML) with your normal email client and keep it under 160 characters and send it to the phone's email address If you don't know the mobile phones carrier network you can check with the provider. If you don't know that either,  Use the services of www.teleflip.com, which I believe is free.  Just  send a message to: [e-mail] and it does the rest.

     Most mobile carriers provide a web portal where you can send a SMS message to a mobile phone simply by using your browser They generally limit you to sending to their own network. (common carrier portals)

Generally replies are sent to the email or SMS address you provide when sending the message . It is also possible with some carriers to access the replies via the web portal, but you probably will need to register and or/ activate the option. If in doubt check with mobile provider.

If you want to send messages to other networks then you need a General/Global web portal.
