Sending my 3 yr old to preschool?

Question

Ok so my daughter will be 3 the day after she starts school. Everytime i ask her what color is that she always says yellow..but when she wants sumthing she says hey mom can i have the pink thing ( when she asks its always the right color, when i ask its always the wrong color) she dont know her shapes but when she's doing a shap puzzle she puts them back in the right spot..am i rushing things? Is she too early to go to school?

Doing the color thing your daughter is doing is normal for her age.

She knows some colors or all of them but sometimes cannot verbalize the correct one.

Mom, she does not need to know her shapes or colors, yet, that is not age-appropriate. When she turns 4, she should know colors and shapes, though.

my 3 year old knows all colors and shapes. she even knows how to spell her name .  dont think im just bragging here but i must say im proud how i taught her from when she was an infant.I even potty trained her when she started walking at the age of 10-11month.she didnt fully understand it at first but she was fully trained by the age of 1. So its all about teaching your child from when they are born.

Sounds like she knows her shapes and colors just fine but is having a power struggle when you ask her directly.  Preschool will be good for her because she will see other children giving the correct anwser and want to mimic their behavior.

the preschool teacher should teach her that in school. i started preschool when i was 2. my bday was a few days later. I was fine. she might cry or something but thats it.

I think it could go either way. I have a three year old daughter also and I have decided to wait until next year to send her. I taught 3 year olds dance for 8 years..... and personally I think most of it is just babysitting (expensive babysitting)! It's good for them socially I think, but you could set up play dates for that. Hope that helps!

Shes not to young to start preschool. I work in a preschool with children as young as 2.  She may know what her colors and shapes are but when you put her on the spot, she doesnt know them.  While in school, she will learn to be able to recongize her shapes and colors better.

I started taking my kids to preschool when they were 2. You've already started to prepare your child for school with the puzzles and all. Being around other children will be good for her and consequently for you too. I would say offhand your little girl knows a lot more than she is letting on. Children do that, but I've never been sure why. Good luck to you both.

No, three is not too little. IF you remember that at that age they learn almost everything through their senses.  They are not going to know shapes' names, color names, etc all the time.  That is not what their brain is concentrating on.  They are learning how it feels, what it smells like, what it tastes like, etc.  They will put it together with words later.  Social skills are very important and she will be learning those on a daily basis.  Just like grownups, there will be good days and bad days.  Dig in and find out what to expect from a three year old so you are not expecting all the wrong things and frustrate her.  Enjoy her learning experiences with her!!

I worked in Early Childhood Education for 12 years and am now against formal education for young children.  What young children need most is attention and the opportunity to practice their language skills. Take this time while you have it and enjoy your daughter's company.

You can give your daughter everything she needs at home: read to her, sing songs together, let her help you around the house, listen to her stories and ideas.

If you are concerned about socialization than look into parent groups that get together, soccer, dance or tumbling classes, or just go to your local playground.

Letting her help with sorting laundry is a great way to teach colors. show her how to do it and talk about the different colors.  This should help her learn to make the connection between the colors you are pointing to and the colors that she recongnizes.

Getting some sorting bears can work too (they can be found in the education section at Walmart or Micheals). Make bingo cards with  bears on them and use the counting bears as markers. or sort them by color.

In any case, don't get overly anxious about her academic level right now.  Most kids are pushed into formal academics at far too young an age. What your daughter needs most is you.
