I am looking into getting another senegal parrot, i had to sell my other one when i moved into my old apartment...but now i have a house and want to get another one. i have 2 potentials that i am looking into, The 1st one is 6 yrs old owned by a little old man who cannot take care of him anymore and he is asking $250. The 2nd one a guy got for his son as a present, he heard it would make a good pet, but he didnt get enough attention and is a little mean, hes about 6 months old,he's asking $150. I can't decide if i should go for the tame one for more money or the meanie for $100 less and try to "reform" him into a good boy...lately i have been very short on cash so...i can't decide. Any advice?

  1. I have raised Senegals for quite a while.  Presently, I have two adults.  One female and one male.  They are mother and son, so I can't breed them.  The female is tame and the male is as mean as can be.  He was hand raised and no matter what we do, he is nasty to everyone but my son.  Once in a while, he will have a weak moment and let me handle him. Senegals are sometimes a one person bird.  Since the $150 bird he is so young, and your money is tight, I suggest that you try to rehab him.  Get a book on parrot behavior and it should help.  There are techniques to use to tame them and keep them from biting.

They are wonderful little birds and trained properly, can be a lot of fun and good little talkers.

    Good luck

  2. you may be able to work with the meanie and get him more tamed, sweetalk him, give him treats and play with him, it should lighten his mood towards you, check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/senagals.ht... for good info on senagals, goodluck!

  3. You need to honestly ask yourself if you have the time, patience and experience to try and re-hab the mean bird. It might sound like a good idea to save a little money, but it's really very time and labor intensive to get a bird to turn around. You won't see results immediately either. Are you willing to wait to be able to play with your bird?
