Question:

Senegal Parrots or Parrotlets?

I've been interested in getting a parrot for a while and thought I'd do some research first. I've narrowed my choices down to a Senegal Parrot or a Pacific Parrotlet. I love both species and don't know which to chose.

Basically I want a companion bird, it can't be too noisy but able to mimic/imitate noises, I'd like it to be friendly and nice, also I'll be going to college in a few years so it'll have to be able to deal with changes. I won't mind a big commitment and I'm ready to take on a new friend for the next decade or so of my life.

I'd like to know what bird you think would be better for me, if you own either a Senegal or a Parrotlet I'd love to know what you think of them. Thanks so much.

  1. A senegal is a wonderful pet. Mine is quite quiet. They speak well in teeny voices . They are quite athletic and need a conure sized cage with swings ,ladders and toys. Get a hand fed, well socialized bird and you will have the best pet ever.Plus they are very pretty---Yogi

  2. A parrotlet might be a better choice for you, particularly if you're going to be taking it with you to college.  While a parrotlet can chirp quite stridently when it wants attention, it is quite incapable of screaming and is considered appropriate for apartment living.

A parrotlet is a small bird that's packed full of personality and intelligence and truly believes itself to be as big as its Amazon cousin.  They are wonderful companion birds if you purchase a hand-fed and *socialized* baby.

    Good luck!
