  1. As to the stairs the answer can be any number of things from taking the glasses off to lifting your head and peeking downward beneath the rim of the glasses. I find both of those approaches work work for me.

As to the monitor I solved that by using a flat screen LCD monitor that has an adjustment for height. I elevate it as far as it can go and then what I see on the screen is not through the lower bi-focal area. Hope that helps.

  2. I wear glasses for close up and glasses for distance. I use to wear bifocals and it bothered my driving. Too, it made me dizzy walking because I look down and then back up. I decided to start wearing two pairs so now I have no problem. Sorry about your fall. Just remove the glasses until you get to the bottom of the stairs.      Poppy

  3. Why senior citizens? I'm 20 and I have bifocals! I understand though that older people have bigger bifocals that take up half the lense, they just look over their glasses or look through the top portion. Sometimes if their eyes are well adjusted to look through the bifocal then they can do that. Good Question though

  4. it will be awhile. when i first got mine i kept missing steps and did fall one time. so be very careful!! and the computer is another thing, always moving my head up and down to get a clear look. things will get better for you in time....

  5. My first bi-focals were the ones with the insert lens, and a line.  I never got used to them.  I was constantly "high stepping" to keep from tripping over the line...lol...I went to the "blended" or progressive, and had a much easier time with those.

  6. I've struggled with this issue for way too many years.  Finally my optometrist gave me this bit of advice.  He said I needed to move my head down when walking down stairs instead of just moving my eyes.

As for the computer monitor, there's not much you can do about that ... but the next time you get your eyeglass prescription filled tell your optometrist that you need tri-focals (3 different levels)  The top one for distance, the middle one for your computer screen and the bottom level for reading.  That's what I have and it's much easier.  You need the middle section for your computer screen.  Bi-focals won't cut it.  Trust me I've been through this.

  7. I couldnt manage this so I went to trifocals and dont have any problems with stairs or my computer.

  8. I know how you feel ... I think we just learn how to tilt our heads or hold our glasses up as needed.  The stair thingy is always going to be an issue with me ... I refuse to look at the steps if I can avoid it.  Feel works better than sight sometimes.

  9. you become accustomed to it. i wear trifocals.

  10. hold on to the railing and don't look down, trust your feet you did before bifocals.

  11. Hahahahaha!!!!

Sorry for the laugh, I so feel you on this.

I tried standard contacts and using reading glasses, but it was a real pain trying to find them.. was I reading or on the computer the last time I used them?,  or forgetting them at home when going shopping.

I have tried the monovision contact lenses... I fell down the stairs twice!!!

I finally gave up and got bifocal contact lenses and so far they work good. I have had to go back and get adjustments, but they worked with me until I found a brand that was comfortable and I have almost perfect vision.

Well that is until a few days ago, I walked into a dark room and fell right over a hassock!

  12. Either take them off or move to a flat.

  13. I'm still laughing, Theresa. I had to hold the rail so I would not trip down the stairs, or do like the movie stars and look straight ahead.  My big complaint was trying to read the newspaper.  My eye doctor had the lens made so that only the top one fourth was not the part used for closeness.  It made a big difference.  What I really want is laser eye surgery so I won't have to keep track of the glasses ever again.

  14. I use reading glasses for reading that's it.  I don't usually, but I can walk down the stairs reading them.  I am 62.

  15. For the computer I also use reading glasses because the bifocals hurt my neck. You should get accustomed to steps though. My reading glasses just came off the rack at wal mart and I only use them for the computer but it is so much more comfortable.

  16. They take some time to get used to. I didn't persevere,I switched to vari-focals (triple lens)

I must have looked a real gem first time I wore bi-focals, I guess I lifted my foot nearly up to my chin just getting on the kerb

  17. I don't need bifocals any longer.  I developed a cataract in one of my eyes earlier than normal and I had it removed last year.  Since then, I've had 20-20 vision in that eye.  Although my other eye needs correction, I see well enough now to do almost anything I want to do!

  18. OMW!! (oh, my word) Too funny!! Strange that you would say that because I wear bifocals and my computer monitor is on several telephone books. :-) My neck hurts too for looking up. I am waiting also when I get used to those dad blasted things. lol

    love ya

    {{{hugs}}}

  19. You didn't say if you have the Progressive Lenses. If you do, you should be used to them in just a few days, I did. The ones with the "window", I tried the cheap reading glasses of that kind, and was always feeling for things. Not Good.

Can't help you on the Monitor-on-the-floor-thing, I could never get used to that.8/22

  20. I never had any problems with my bifocals.  When I'm not wearing my  glasses, I wear monovision contact lenses which means I can see everything like I used  to!  They're GREAT!

  21. very carefully!

  22. I use reading glasses for the computer....I can't use bifocals on the computer!!!!  As far as the stairs.....I feel for that next step with the heel of my shoe before I put my foot down!!!  Nobody gonna see me bite it!!

  23. Carefully with plenty of practice. When I still had my bifocals it took a few days before I got used to moving my eyes (Sight) instead of my head.  Mow that I have multi focal, (5 lenses) it took no time at all to get used to them. Can focus anywhere, from the floor to my knees to the keyboard and the screen and to the dictionary at my right  - only moving my eyes.

    Peace.
