Senior National Badminton Championships: Sourabh Varma becomes Men’s Singles national champion
India’s upcoming shuttler, Sourabh Varma, has become the new Men’s Singles national champion after beating B. Sai Praneeth in the title match of 76th Senior National Badminton Championships in Bangalore, India, on Wednesday, January 25.
The top seed Sourabh, who is currently World Number 48, lived up to the expectations and won the final contest without losing even a single game.
Sourabh displayed his impressive skills against the lower ranked Praneeth and took the match in straight games after working hard for 44 minutes.
It was a well-fought straight-set contest as both shuttlers played tremendous badminton but Sourabh dominated the game in the ending phase of both sets and emerged as the winner.
Both young shuttlers snapped each other’s heel in the opening half of first set as they played with precision and maintained the pace of rallies at the maximum level. Sourabh was playing remarkable badminton at net while Praneeth was dominating the game
from rear-court area.
The score progressed without giving advantage to any player until the one-minute break in the first game. They entertained the crowd with their elevated play and remained close on points table.
After the break, Praneeth applied different tactics to dominate the pace of rallies but failed to take advantage as his higher ranked rival was in good control. Until the ending points of first set, no one could take a clear lead.
At the concluding phase of first game, Sourabh showed his class as he played with incredible aggression and won the set in a superb way by a tight margin of 21-19.
In the second game, Praneeth tried to take an early lead but failed as his higher ranked challenger was quicker in taking the bird early from all corners of court. Sourabh was focused in the game and did not let his opponent to dictate the pace.
The score remained equal until the final points of second set. At this crucial stage, Sourabh again proved his superior skills and bagged the set with a close 21-19 score on the board.
The top seed ended the final match in two games with a margin of 21-19 and 21-19.
