Senior Players' Golf Championship arrives at TPC Potomac
The 2010 Ryder Cup fever is over and finally the world can now focus on other golf events as well. For instance, the Championship Tour is back with the season's last major, Constellation Energy Senior Players' Championship which carries a purse of US$ 2.7
million and is arriving at the TPC Potomac, Avenel Farm with players of 50 plus age.
This senior players' event comes every year to Maryland with the finest of golfers. This time, the par-70 course will feature three sensational players including Tom Kite, Gil Morgan and Bill Glasson.
One of the major attractions at this 28th annual tournament will be the concert after the third round where tribute would be paid to the US military. The rock band from New Orleans, ‘Better than Ezra’, will take the stage. The tribute will include
a colour guard and national anthem. This would be sponsored by the USO of Metropolitan Washington and it will be staged next to the 18th hole.
Entry is free for the entire tournament including Military Appreciation Concert. According to the PGA Tour officials, this event would be one of its kinds as complimentary tickets have been offered to all the spectators for the first time at a U.S. professional
golf tour.
The spectators' seats will be next to those of the former PGA Tour champions. This means that they will have a good view of the defending champion, Jay Haas; 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team captain, Corey Pavin as well as Bernhard Langer and Hal Sutton.
Meanwhile, PGA official added, “Fred Couples, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, David Frost, Tommy Armour III, Jeff Sluman, Nick Price, Takoma Park and Fred Funk will be one of the most prestigious players on the field.”
As for Fred Funk, he has been on the PGA Tour for 21 years now. In this long journey, he claimed eight tournaments and three majors on the Champions Tour including the 2009 U.S. Senior Open. But, he never claimed a title in Maryland and his best has been
a second spot finish in 2008.
The venue in itself is an attraction at this season’s tournament. The course has been renovated by Stephen Britton and it is stretched on 7,139-yard with a par-70 layout over a wooden terrain. The greens have been rebuilt while tees and fairways from the
9th to the 13th have been re-routed and more hazards have been added to enlarge the thrill.
Mike Sullivan, TPC Potomac's General Manager, said in his comments, "There is little doubt that the Champions Tour players will be thoroughly impressed with the renovations to TPC Potomac and the upgraded amenities....we look forward to provide our members,
homeowners and fans with an outstanding experience."
Finally, this is it for the 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players' Championship which will start tomorrow on October 7th at TPC Potomac, Maryland. The event would feature golfers who are above 50. These may include Tom Watson, who withdrew
from the Scottish Open in June and Corey Pavin, the captain of losing side at Celtic Manor. Pavin’s team couldn't win the 2010 Ryder Cup; let us see if he manages a win here.
