ODI of their ongoing 5-match series, played at Lord’s in London on September 2.
“The guys who have come in, they can play,” he said, referring to the less experienced members of the squad. “I've seen them win matches for their teams back home on the big stage in finals and stuff like that.
“But they are inexperienced and when you have inexperience in your team you need the senior players to take control, including myself,” he added. “Getting out for 20s and 30s isn't good enough at this level it's as simple as that.”
Following their all-important 2-0 Test victory over the Poms, which enabled them to clinch the top spot on the ICC’s top Test team rankings, the Proteas got off to a strong start during the subsequent 5-match ODI series.
The first game was washed out due to rain, but the second match, played at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on August 28 saw the Proteas claiming an 80-run win, aided by a massive 150-run contribution from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/HM-Amla-c1557.
However, they were unable to replicate the performance during the 3rd ODI on August 31 at the Oval, conceding a 4-wicket defeat. The batsmen failed to fire, with Amla top-scoring for the side with a mere 43, while the remainder of the batsmen
found themselves unable to contribute much.
The fourth ODI spelled a similar fate for the visitors, as their batsmen failed to convert starts into substantial scores. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Smith-c1473 (29) and Jean
Paul Duminy (18) were unable to take their individual scores one notch higher, while de Villiers himself was dismissed at 39 by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JC-Tredwell-c1676 (8-0-35-3).
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-Elgar-c1351, who has only played 4 ODIs for the national side (having debuted during the current series) managed to contribute 35, in addition to claiming one scalp. However, the failures of the senior batsmen cost
the team heavily, and they went on to concede yet another defeat, with the series now leaning in England’s favour 2-1.
