Seniors Tour returns to Portugal with Seniors Open de Portugal scheduled in November
The European Seniors Tour, after an absence of three long years, is all set to return to the Belas Golf Club in Lisbon, Portugal. The Senior Open de Portugal will be held from September 29 to October 1, and will carry a purse of $300,000.
Last of the Senior’s Tour played in Portugal was the 2008 Azeros Senior Open won by the Aussie Stewart Ginn. This will be the eighth episode of the tour being brought to Portugal.
The country held its first European Seniors Tour the Daily Telegrah European Seniors Match Play Championship in 2001 and again in 2002. The Seniors Tour returned to the country in 2002 and 2004 with the Senior Tour Championship and again in 2005 and 2006
with the Senior Open of Portugal.
The Belas Golf Club, the host of European Challenge Tour in 1998, is owned by the Andre Jordan Group. The owner Andre Jordan said, “We are delighted to host another European Senior Tour event, this time on our Lisbon course.
After several Portuguese Opens we organized in Quinta do Lago, the World Cup in 2004 in Vilamoura, and having brought the Portuguese Masters to Victoria Golf Club in 2006, we are looking forward to hosting this great tournament at our course at Belas Golf
Club.”
Andy Stubbs, the Managing Director of the European Tour also spoke on the occasion and paid his gratitude to the André Jordan Group for their hospitality. Stubbs also said that the Tour is pleased to return to the historic city of Lisbon and the players
will have a great time both on and off the course. Stubbs also thanked the Portuguese Golf Federation for their support. The Club de Golf de Belas is a 6,977 yards Par-72 course overlooking the beautiful suburbs of Lisbon.
Last of the Seniors Tour was held at the Mission Hills Golf Club with Scotsman Sandy Lyle wining at the ISPS Handa Senior World Championship. Mission Hills Golf Club is the world’s largest golf course, recognized by the Guinness book of world records.
The club is home to many courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Pete Dye and Greg Norman, the legends of the sport. The club beacons towards China’s commitment for the development of the sport in the country.
The 2011 Handa Cup Senior Masters which was scheduled to be held at Ohmurasaki Golf Club in Japan from November 11-13, has been cancelled in wake of wide spread destruction caused by the March 11th earthquake.
The decision was approved by the PGA of Japan. Chairman PGA of Japan Isao Matsui spoke on the occasion and said “The PGA of Japan will support, through golf, all the people in the disaster areas to recover. Our thoughts are with those who have suffered loss
and bereavement.”
The tournament was cancelled following a request by the International Sports Promotion Society which was also the official sponsor of the tournament. The company revealed that one of their facilities was severely damaged by the earthquake.
