Sentenced to be 'Stoned to Death'?

When they say that someone is sentenced to be 'stoned to death', do they literally mean throwing rocks at them until they're dead?

The person is buried up to their waist, with their hands bound around them and stones are thrown at them until they die from internal bleeding or severe concussion.

Not a nice way to die.

yeah - I think they bury them in a hole in the groud so only their head is above ground then throw friggin big rocks at their head till brain matter is liberally splashed around - that's how nice certain cultures are!!  Not gonna mention any particular countries or religions that sanction this kind of behaviour but I'm sure you'll know who they are, and that they are immigrating to the west and are starting to demand that the laws in the west pander to their ideas for punishment.

in 1978 I had the misfortune to wittiness what the Saudis euphemistically call a stoning in the square in Damam, what looked like a girl,(you could not tell because of the hi jab) was secured to a post , what looked like a group of male's the eldest of witch picked up a rock and through it at the girl, i could not see if it hit her , another old man walked over to the group and spoke for a few seconds then went and spoke to the girl, then he waved to a large truck , the truck backed up to the girl and tipped its load of rocks onto the girl, we,,, there where two of us,,, got pushed down a ally by some Saudi friends and away , this barbaric act will stay with me for the rest of my life, I did not find out any more of the history ,I only remember the sounds and smell

Yes and it is the prescribed 'sharia' law for heinous crimes such as apostasy (losing ur religion), adultery and homosexuality.

(there have been several cases of women being stoned to death for having been raped, but unable to supply the necessary 4 male witnesses to testify that she was not complicit!)

Yes, they wrap them up in some kind of cloth and literally "plant" their body halfway up in the ground so that when they start throwing things at them, the person's body is forced to stay upright so the rocks can continue to hit them straight on.  I won't get into the rest, but it's absolutely gruesome.  

Sometimes when it's just a spur-of-the-moment thing, like an honor killing like what happened in the Kurdish area of Iraq not too long ago, a mob of men gather and the father and brothers of the young girl they're killing (because she slept with a young man from the wrong tribe) throw big rocks and concrete at her for awhile while the mob of men cheer and take photo/video with their cell phones, and then they finally take a concrete block to her head and finish her off.  That's sill concidered stoning.

yes. something we do not tolerate in the uk, but we allow people  to come and live in this country,that think this is acceptable! similarly people who cut hands off small children for stealing, pouring petrol over your daughter for looking at another man, not forgetting the people who burn and toture their children because they believe them to be witches or possessed by the devil. its a funny old world.
