Sepang International Circuit issues statement on death of Marco Simoncelli – MotoGP news
Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chairman Dato’ Mokhzani Mahathir revealed a statement on the death of San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli.
The race was immediately stopped and then cancelled due to the unfortunate situation. Following the crash Simoncelli laid unconscious on the track when track marshals approached him.
Mahathir said, “SIC would like to state that the decision to cancel the race was taken after considering the severity of the accident. The decision was agreed upon by SIC and Dorna Sports SL, the commercial rights holder of MotoGP.”
Super Sic died in a fatal crash that took place during the Malaysian Grand Prix held at SIC last Sunday. Simoncelli had a low side crash but still was left hung on his bike and steered into the centre of the track.
While he was hanging onto his bike trying to regain the control, Colin Edwards of Tech3 slammed into him. Along Edwards, Valentino Rossi of Ducati Team also hit Simoncelli’s RCV and ran off the track but escaped unharmed.
As it was declared that Simoncelli has died due to severe injuries, the circuit officials made the announcement about the cancellation of the race.
The priority was to inform Simoncelli’s family about his death. Then the officials declared the cancellation of the event at SIC.
Mahathir further added, “SIC would like to reiterate that all preparations and precautionary steps were taken to ensure we staged a safe race in accordance with FIM, AAM and Dorna safety requirements. However, the inherently dangerous nature of motorsports
does not allow a race organiser or track owner to give a guarantee that nothing untoward will happen during a race.”
The medical staff present at the track made every effort to revive Simoncelli in the van and medical centre at the track.
The Malaysian circuit is known to be one of the safest and widest circuits in the MotoGP season. The track is managed by professionals. The track marshals provide extended assistance on and off track at SIC.
The track is operated at the highest level of safety standards and the hard work is ensured at every event held at SIC. Therefore, it is quite sad to have such an event take place at the SIC.
