Sepoy to give the royal blues their debut win through the Darley July Cup in the capable hands of jockey, Frankie Dettori
The four-time Group 1 winner under the prior charge of the Australian trainer, Peter Snowden, Sepoy, holds an entry in the Group 1 Darley July Cup (British Champions Series And Global Sprint Challenge). He will get to represent his Godolphin connections
over the six furlong track at Newmarket on Saturday, 14th July.
Fifteen three-year and above racing sensations will grace the track for taking home the £256,329 prize money. Sepoy is backed by 17 to 2 shots and a tremendously successful 2011 campaign. It will be the first time that Elusive Quality’s chestnut colt will
ride with the champion stable jockey, Frankie Dettori.
How will the duo formulate a tactic to be the first ones through the wire after leaving from the fourth gate in the field of fifteen, is just round the corner, and has kept the connections and crowd anxious.
The colt whose associations switched on 25th April, 2012 from Peter Snowden’s Australian stables to the UAE settlement of the Sheikh Al Maktoum string, has not only raced but has won in graded company before.
As if indicating his reservations with the shift in status quo, the four-year-old colt out of mare, Watchful, denied success for the Australian connections in his farewell race, and treated the royal blue flagship no different by bringing in a ghastly result
through the debut race with them.
The Mahmood Al Zarooni trained lost the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored By Gulf News on 31st March, 2012 at the Meydan race course over six furlongs.
The four-year-old ended tenth on the track of twelve contestants.
That unfortunate state of affairs existed three months ago.
"When he arrived here (in Newmarket) he was a bit down. We gave him an easy time to recover. He has recovered and is in good form. He did a piece of work on Saturday and he's showing that sort of form (as he did in Australia),” commented the trainer.
The lay-off is sufficient enough for the Darley bred to swing back into from, and under the supervision of one of the best UAE trainers, it is not possible that the shape of the Group 1 winner has not improved from the last time that he raced.
The race today will really answer the question if changing the connections have or have not faded the glimmer in one of the best Australian rides.
