Question:

September Honeymoon Antigua, Aruba, other?

I will be going on my honeymoon the last week of September this year. We are looking for a more private resort with beautiful beaches and clear waters. I prefer the least amount of bugs. We like small bars no clubs or hard partying. We want to do some outdoor activities on the island but want to make sure that it is the environment we want. I understand that rain may play a part in both locations but was told that these islands do not get direct hits from hurricanes. We are open to other islands by suggestion. We prefer an all adult resort.

We have spent some time in the caribean and know what we DONT want (i.e. Jamaica was dirty and Cozumel was too "spring break")

Please give any and all advise on a location, resort, things to do, friendliness of people, cleanliness of islands, safety, BUGS, etc

  1. If you want to go to the Caribbean in september, Curacao would be one of your safer bets considering hurricanes. Curacao is also outside the hurricane belt, and offers a great deal of activities.

For a honeymoon, I would recommend you either the Avila Beach Hotel, Kura Hulanda Hotel or Livingstone Resort.

For the most part bugs will not be a major problem, but this might depend of how much it has rained in the days preceding your arrival.

  2. Try Fantasy Island Resort on Roatan. Great Honeymoon packages, can do and see everything. The bug thing I cant help you with. Ocean beach = bugs. Bring repellant.

  3. September is the height of the hurricane season for the Caribbean.  Even if Antigua doesn't take a direct hit, it can still get a lot of rain.  You really should do your planning through a travel agent if you plan to come to Antigua because this island is not like other islands in the Caribbean.  But if BUGS .. .or the lack of them is a biggie with you... I don't know why you are coming to the Caribbean.. we have bugs here that are world class and unknown to the entomologists

  4. Since you plan on traveling during hurricane season, Aruba is your better destination.

Check out this lovely resort in Aruba.

Have a wonderful honeymoon. Good Luck and enjoy)

  5. We honeymooned the first week of October in St. Lucia. We highly recommend the island! Absolutely beautiful, perfect weather. We had one rainy day out of 8.

  6. The island municipality of Culebra is picture perfect post-card. Flamenco, Costa Brava, Culebrita island beaches (smaller island some 10 to 20 minutes away by boat, which you can rent along with its Captain at the Dinghy Dock for about $40 dollars for the day). Soni beach is a display of smaller islands in the horizon as well as a peacefull place with stretches of white sand and turquoise blue waters; which if you`re lucky you may have all to yourself or share with 3 to 5 persons. Inhabitants are friendly, many Americans and Europeans have fled civilization to live here. Seafood is fresh and cooked deliciously. Have some Carrucho (Conch shell meat), it`s delicious as well as the rest of Puertorican cuisine like Chillo (Red Snapper). You can explore Culebra and Culebrita island, do scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, setting up a mailbox and hang out at the beach. If you want more secluded resorts try The Westin-Riomar in Rio Grande Puerto Rico, The Cerromar in Dorado (very good Golfing there) or Copa Marina in southwest Puerto Rico. Providing you get good weather these places are great. If you feel more secure going further south of the Caribbean there`s  also Curazao and Bonnaire which are also very beautifull, owned by the Dutch and part of Aruba group of islands. Also Isla Margarita is a  beautifull island with great shopping bargains on everything you can think of. However I don`t know if Venezuela`s Pres, Chaves will continue to allow Americans entrance to his territory.
