Septum Piercing: can I use a plastic retainer when I first get it pierced?

I want to get my septum pierced, but I'm playing High School volleyball right now and cannot wear any metal jewelery; am I able to use a plastic (NOT metal) retainer in my nose right away? Like, maybe even have them put in a plastic one right when it's pierced?

  1. Usually body piercings heal better on good quality metal such as surgical steel and titanium. Speak to the piercer ask them if an acrylic jewelry can be placed in, removing the piercing to place in a retainer continuously during the healing process isn't a good idea since it will slow down the healing process and can cause complications. Good Luck.

If it can't be done without any problems, the septum piercing takes btw 2-3 months to fully heal, you should than think about waiting till volleyball season is over to get it pierced.

  2. when you get anykind of peircing..you cannot take the original bar out for a least 6 weeks. otherwise it can get infected more quickly or tear the skin.

  3. you can probably get a septum retainer in PTFE for initial jewelry. speak to your piercer.

  4. You can't use acrylic (plastic) for a fresh piercing. It is too porous and can contribute to infection.

You can get pyrex or quartz retainers that are fine for initial jewelry. Just make sure to let your piercer know before hand.

You may want to wait until the season is over before getting pierced.

  5. You can easily hide your septum,

but flipping it up into your nose,

    go onto youtube.com

and type in 'hiding my septum'.

    So everyone wins,

you can have your septum with good metal jewellery which will ensure it heals the best,

and you can still do volleyball (:

Piercings don't heal well with plastic retainers.

Thats why you're pierced with steel/metal.
