Question:

Serama Drama? Can any one shed some light?

I'm looking into getting a showmanship/show bird for my son. I think Seramas are beautiful and certainly small enough to be used for showmanship but I'm a bit concerned that there seems to be little unity concerning the breed here in the U.S.

As a rabbit exhibitor/breeder I am not thrilled by the idea that there is no standard accepted by the APA or the Bantam Poultry clubs. There are a few new and unrecognized breeds of rabbit I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole for the unorganized manner they seem to be worked on. I want to avoid the same types of problems with a poultry breed if there are problems with organization or inconsistantcies in its development. Does that make sense?

What info I can find online about the breed seems contentious and turns me off. Can anyone fill me in on what seems to be a bit of Serama drama?

IS there an official club? Which one? Is any club claiming to be "the" Serama breed club close at all to getting a standard accepted? With the ARBA (rabbits) there is an organized way of doing things. Presenting a standard and specimens for acceptance. After so many accepted presentations, a new breed may be accepted. I am assuming the APA is the same way. What kind of progress is being made with the acceptance of a single Serama standard?

Lots of questions, I know. Any info might be helpful to me. Thanks.

  1.      There is no official club for the Serama.  Yes, some do claim a lot of things, but the Serama has not been recognized by the APA\ABA yet.  There is an organized way of doing things with chickens, but that hasn't happened yet with Serama.

There are a number of serious breeders out there that are going about it the right way, breeding birds to standard without being involved in all the "drama" surrounding the breed.  Most of these breeders are not associated with the organizations causing most of the "drama, but are working quietly on their own to get the job done.  The "drama" is just people and their overinflated attitudes and egos.

My suggestion for you is that if all your looking for is a showmanship bird, then stick to an accepted, recognized breed of chicken.
