Serbia defeats Brazil by 3-1 in third round of 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup - Volleyball
The Brazilian men’s national volleyball team played with their Serbian counterparts on November 29th on the third day of the third round of the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup. The championship is currently being staged in Japan, with multiple cities
playing hosts to the teams that have arrived for the games. The match between Brazil and Serbia was played in Hamamatsu and lasted for a total of four thrilling sets at the end of which the Serbian side surprised their opponents as well as the spectators by
bagging themselves an impressive win.
The first set of the match saw both teams coming out strong and stay neck to neck with each other. The frame remained close all through but the Serbians were able to pull off a win in the end. The loss of the first set of the game triggered the Brazilians
into action as a result of which they were able to step up their game and secure a win that equalised the match. The third set started off on level grounds but near the end the Serbians were able to take the lead and stick with the advantage which enabled
them to secure the frame.
The Brazilians seemed determined to take the match to a fifth set but the Serbians proved to be the stronger side as they got themselves the fourth set too and sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 27-25, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-22.
The coach of the Serbian, Igor Kolakovic, side expressed his jubilation in the following manner after his team had earned a win: “It is our best game in this tournament. I said yesterday we don’t get a chance to play Brazil a lot, let alone beat them. We
are very satisfied with this win set.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Brazilian squad, Bernardo Rezende, shared his views by giving these statements: “I think what our captain said was right. We had so many mistakes. There were many breaks we didn’t [capitalize on]. Serbia played their first
good match in the competition and they deserved to win. We had some tension, but its my responsibility to build the group to strongly resist this kind of situation.”
The player that was able to top the score on both sides of the court was the captain of the Serbian team, Ivan Miljkovic who was able to stand out by scoring a total of 22 points. On the other hand, the player that remained the most active on the Brazilian
side was their captain Gilberto Godoy Filho (Giba), who kept the pressure on the Serbians by tallying 15 points altogether. However, the Most Impressive Player award was given out to the Brazilian Milos Nikic.
