Serbia defeats England by 3-0 in their second match: London Volleyball Invitational
The London Volleyball Invitational tournament being played at Earls Court on Thursday, July 21st, saw hosts England compete against the Serbian squad. Both the sides were playing their second match of the tournament in front of 450 fans in attendance as
Serbia walked away winners.
Despite the fact that the English team was playing with the added advantage of being on their home court, the Serbians were able to seal a win by bagging three back to back sets. The first set of the match was pretty much one sided as the English team seemed
to be struggling and had a tough time keeping up with the pace of the Serbian squad. The second set saw the English come out with a worse performance while the Serbians put on an impressive show of volleyball skill and were able to smother their opponents
in the second set. Playing with a two set deficit in the third enabled the English side to rally together and step up their game but the effort was futile and the Serbians won the match at the following final set scores: 25-18, 25-14 and 27-25.
With their recent win, the Serbians have been able to tally a total of two wins in the tournament without suffering a single loss. The first win that the Serbians were able to pull off was against the U.S. side at 3-1. On the other hand, this is the first
loss for the English team which was able to hand out a defeat to the 21st ranked Mexican team. The win had come as a cause of much encouragement as the fledging English side, that has the 94th world slot, was able to create an upset.
Next in line for the still undefeated Serbian side is a match against the Egyptians, who have yet to win a match in the tournament. The first matches that the Egyptians have played were against tough teams. In the first, the Egyptian side was swept by the
Brazilian squad whereas in their second match it was the Americans that made a clean sweep over the Egyptians.
The tournament currently taking place in London is acting as the test event for the London 2012 Olympics as Earls Court is scheduled to feature the indoor volleyball tournament of the international sporting event next year. By the time that the court is
ready for the Olympics, it will have a capacity to hold about 15,000 spectators.
