Serbia defeats Italy in semi-final round: Day twelve – European Water Polo Championships
Serbian senior national squad has defeated Italy in the Men’s semi-final round for 1st- 4th position on day twelve of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Friday, January 27 at the Pieter van
den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Serbia experienced strong resistance from Italian squad in the first half, but they managed to triumph over their opposing team with a lead of four goals. The Serbian players enjoyed a commendable 12-8 win over Italy in the four-quarter game.
These European Championships pave the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games and provide a platform to world-class players to overcome their shortcomings before the mega event.
Surprisingly, the Italian players remained dominant in the first quarter, where they stroke five goals to suppress Serbia’s accomplishment of four goals and the score remained 4-5 after the first quarter.
Nevertheless, the tables turned in the second round, where Serbian players demonstrated their gruelling efforts and accomplished four goals. In contrast, the Italian team managed to score just one goal and the score went up to 8-6 after the first half.
The same continued in the third quarter, where Serbian players went full rampant and blocked almost all goal attempts of their challenging squad. Serbia stroke three goals in the third quarter while Italy was able to notch up a lone goal and the score turned
11-7 after the third round.
With the lead of four goals, Serbia’s win was inevitable but it was not a hard goal to achieve. Nonetheless, Italy failed to make any substantial improvement in their strategy and clinched just one goal. Their effort in the fourth quarter was settled down
by Serbian players, who also scored one goal in the final round and ensured their win.
Filip Filipovic of Serbia was announced man of the match as he raked three goals in the game and played a prominent role in his team’s victory.
Furthermore, Serbia has now qualified for the final of the tournament, which will take place on January 29. In addition, the crowd enjoyed breath-taking efforts of all teams while the session ended after the completion of all scheduled matches.
