Serbia defeats Slovenia by 3-1: CEV Volleyball European Championship match
The Serbian national men’s volleyball team had a match against the Slovenians on Sunday, September 11. The contest was part of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship and the Serbians ended up on top by 3-1. Both the Serbians and Slovenians are in
Pool A, whose matches are being held in Vienna.
The contest between the two sides required four long and grueling sets at the end of which the Serbians were celebrating their well earned win.
The first set of the match was completely dominated by Serbia and it took them no time to make an opening set win. However, after an embarrassing loss of the first set, the Slovenians were able to get themselves together and fight long and hard. Slovenia
lost the second set as well but they were able to avoid a clean sweep by winning the third one. The fourth set remained close as well but it was the Serbians that were able to seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-9, 25-23, 23-25
and 25-23.

The head coach of the Serbian team, Igor Kolakovic, expressed himself in the following words after his team had won the match: “We played with a lot of patience at the end of the second and fourth set and that made the difference. Slovenia played very well
especially with their service. Tomorrow is a new day. We will have to show a lot of discipline and patience against Austria as well to make it to the quarter finals.”
On the other hand, the Slovenian head coach Veselin Vukovic shared his views in the following manner: “Serbia is a team of great quality that has the potential to win it all. I’m still satisfied with my team because every player gave his best out there.”
After a smothering first set loss, the Slovenian attackers got into motion to set things right for their team. Specifically, Alen Sket was a big help for the Slovenians as he alone scored 11 points in the second set. The third set saw the Slovenians coming
up from behind to take the lead at 16-15 and eventually win the set. However, Serbia quenched all hopes of the Slovenians by bagging the fourth set of the game at 25-23.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, it was a Slovenian player, Sket, that was able to lead all scorers by posting a total of 22 points in the entire match. On the other hand, the top scorer on the Serbian side was Ivan Miljkovic with 18 points.
