Serbia disappoint Spain in preliminary round, Group B: Day one – European Water Polo Championships
Serbian team disappointed Spain in the preliminary round of Men’s water polo of Group B on opening day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 16 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Serbian squad faced strong resistance from their opponents throughout the 32-minute game but they managed to take lead of three goals in the second half and enjoyed an 8-5 win over Spain.
The first quarter of the game was pretty tense but Dusko Pijetlovic of Serbia notched up first goal of the match and placed his team in a strong position. Spain failed to show any improvement on the points table and the round concluded with 1-0 lead of the Serbian team.
Unlike the first quarter, the Spanish players geared up their efforts in second quarter and achieved three goals in the round. Their efforts were trailed by two goals from the side of Serbian team that managed to draw the scores in the first half. The score remained 3-3 after the halftime.
In the meantime, the Serbian squad realised their need to dominate the third quarter and scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game. Their effort was followed by Felipe Perrone of Spain, who managed to advance his team on the scorecard by just one goal. Perrone’s effort failed to place his team in a strong position as Vanja Udovicic of Serbia scored third goal of the round for his team and the score went to 6-4 after the third round.
Serbian squad continued its supremacy in the final round and overwhelmed Spain’s lone goal effort by accomplishing two goals in the fourth quarter, winning the match by a lead of three goals.
Udovicic was the highest goal scorer of the game as he grabbed win for his team by achieving three goals in the game. Furthermore, the crowd admired ruthless efforts of both teams while Serbian squad received a huge round of applause for their first win of the tournament. In addition, Serbia will now compete with Germany in its second match of the game.
