Serbia overcomes Spain by 3-1 in Pool D of Boys' Youth World Championship
A Pool D match of the Boys' Youth World Championship took place between Serbia and Spain on August 21 in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The match between the two sides took four sets to end and resulted in a victory for the Serbians.
The first set of the match was tough as both the teams played well and fought till the end. However, the Serbians prevailed in bagging a win in the end. The second set of the match was the tightest of all as the Serbians and Spanish sides fought long and
hard but the team that was able to better the other was that of the Spanish. The third set took the same tone as the previous ones with the Serbian sealing the deal in the end but the fourth set saw the Spanish slacken a bit as the French charged on towards
a match win at the following final set scores: 21-25, 28-26, 25-22 and 25-21.
The coach of the Serbian team Milan Djuricic gave the following comments at the press conference after the match: “We had a lot of pressure on us for this game, it was very important. We saved a set ball on the second set and that was a key moment. We were
really close of having to go to Buenos Aires.”
Whereas the Spanish coach Ricardo Maldonado shared his views in the following words: “My compliments to Serbia for the victory and to this great player sitting in this table, Uros Kovacevic. Serbia played better on the decisive moments of each set and that’s
why they won the match.”
The Spanish were leading in the first set when the first technical time out came at 8-7. The Serbians kept on trailing behind but could not provide much of a challenge to stop the Spanish from securing the top spot in the Pool D by winning the opening set
at 25-21.
The Spanish did not let go of the advantage till the second time out at 16-13 but the Serbian side took the lead from their rivals after a while. Once they had the lead, the Serbians did not rest until they had bagged the second set at 28-26.
Winning the previous set had the Serbs all charged in the third and they got a lead at 8-4 but the Spanish closed in the gap at 16-14, only to see the Serbs speed off to another win at 25-22. The fourth set was tied at 21-21 but the Serbs made sure that
they got ahead and bagged the set at 25-21.
With their recent win, the Serbians have got themselves a position into the second round of the tournament. The Spanish side had already made their way into the next round as they are placed at the top of the Pool D, with the Serbians following behind.
