Serbia sweeps Argentina in a FIVB World Grand Prix match – Volleyball news
Serbia and Argentina played in a Pool J match of the FIVB World Grand Prix against each other on Sunday June 24, 2012. The city of Bangkok, Thailand hosted the contest while the venue of the match was the Keelawes 1 Gymnasium. The European champions did
not take long to make the match reach its close as they won the contest by making a clean sweep over Argentina.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 25-16, 25-22 and 26-24.
Despite the fact that they won the match, Serbia has no hope of making it into the final round of the competition as they rank number 11 in the tournament after securing a total of 11 points.
The coach of the Serbian side, Branko Kovacevic, shared his views at the press conference after the match in the following manner, “I’m delighted with the win as it’s our first this weekend. It’s the first time that these young players have played together
in the team. I think they obtained valuable experience. I appreciated the large crowd who cheered us all the way.”
On the other hand, the Argentinean coach, Horacio Bastit, expressed his sentiments in the following way, “Congratulations on Serbia’s win. It’s difficult for us to play them. However, we played according to plan...I think we did our best in this year’s World
Grand Prix. We got valuable experience by taking on the world’s top teams.”
The player that was able to tally the highest score in the match was Ana Bjelica of Serbia as she put up 15 points on her side of the score board. On the other hand, the highest points secured by an Argentinean player were 12, which were added by Lucia Fresco.
The opening set of the match started off with a Serbian lead at 7-3 that they were able to extend till 13-9. Argentina did not give up hope just yet and was able to close in the gap but before they could turn the tables, Serbia had taken off again to bag
the first set at 25-16.
The confidence generated by winning the first set pushed the Serbians to take an early lead at 5-2 in the second frame of the game. Argentina did not offer much resistance as the Serbians extended their lead to 8-2. However, Argentina stepped up their game
and made the set reach a tie at 16-16 and kept the score close afterwards. Despite the effort put in by the Argentineans, Serbia was able to secure the frame at 25-22.
Serbia took the lead at 12-8 in the third frame and sped up ahead till 21-16 before Argentina got to tie the frame at 23-23. However, Serbia had come too far to let go and they sealed the deal by bagging the third set for themselves at 26-24.
