Serbia sweeps Australia in a FIVB Men's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament match
The Serbians were able to make a clean sweep over Australia on the fourth day of the FIVB Men's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament on June 6th, Wednesday.
The tournament is being hosted by Tokyo, Japan while the venue of the matches is the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym.
Not only did the Serbians win the match in three back to back sets, they were able to dominate their rivals all through. The win has earned the Serbians a winning streak of four matches in the tournament so far while the Australians lost their first match
yet.
The final set scores stood at the following points: 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.
The coach of the Serbian squad, Igor Kolakovic shared his joy at the recent win in the following words, “This was an important game for us. We had lots of energy and perfect concentration. We are thinking about making the Olympic Games. That is our focus.”
On the other hand, the Australian coach gave the following statements at the press conference, “It was clear the standard of both teams was different. We have the potential to improve, but we must take the next step. We must challenge ourselves to improve.”
The top scorers of the match were the two Serbian players, Nikola Kovacevic and Sasa Starovic, each of whom were able to put up 13 points while on the Australian side, the highest scorer was Igor Yudin who kept his side of the score board ticking by adding
12 points for his team.
The opening set started off with a Serbian lead at 6-3 that extended till the second technical time out at 16-10. The Australians could not manage to pull up ahead and the Serbians won easily at 25-18. The second and the third sets followed the same pattern
as the first one with the Serbians staying in control all through and the Australians trailing behind. Therefore, Serbia won the sets at 25-19 and 25-18 respectively.
Next in line for the Serbians is a match with the Puerto Ricans who have recently lost to Iran. On the other hand, the Australians will be heading off to face the Japanese.
