Serbia wins FIVB Boys' Youth World Championship - Volleyball news
The gold medal match of the FIVB Boys' Youth World Championship took place on the August 28th in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The contest was between the defending champions Serbia and Spain. The match took on thrilling tones and rewarded the spectators
with a lot of excitement in the Gimnasio Osvaldo Casanova gym. At the end of the day, the final cheer came from the Serbian side as they won the champions title by 3-2.
The first set of the match remained competitive throughout but the Serbians prevailed in gaining the upper hand. The second set saw the Spanish side slacken a bit as they fell behind while the Serbians marched on to win the set by a significant margin. The
third set was the most intense as the Serbians looked for an early win while the Spanish wanted to give themselves a winning chance in the final. In the end, Spain succeeded in taking the match to a fifth set by winning the third one as well as the fourth.
The final set of the game was tight in the beginning but the Serbians sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-19, 28-30, 16-25 and 15-11.
The coach of the Serbian team, Milan Djuricic, expressed his jubilation in the following manner at the press conference after the match: “It was a real final between the two best teams in the tournament. Congratulations to my team and also to Spain.”
On the other hand the Spanish coach, Ricardo Maldonado, gave the following statement: “Congratulations to Serbia because they played better than us in the key moments and that’s what really matters who play well in the clutch moments.”
The first set of the match was dotted by errors as both the sides settled into the game. However, by the time the second technical timeout was reached, Serbia was leading at 16-14 only to give it away to Spain at 18-16. The match remained tough until the
end when the Serbians made the final blow and bagged the opening set at 25-23.
Capitalising on the momentum generated by winning the first set of the game, the Serbians were able to come out strong in the second set and take a 8-2 lead. Spain kept on trailing all the way till the end at 25-19.
The loss of the first two sets of the game did not sit well with the Spanish and they put on an impressive display of volleyball to get the lead at 16-11 and go all the way with the advantage to end the third set at 30-28.
The first technical timeout of the fourth set saw the Spanish leading at 8-7 and take the advantage till 16-11. From that point on, Serbian was left behind as the Spanish secured the set at 25-16. However, the Spanish could not pull up a similar performance
and lost the final set to Serbia by 15-11.
Despite the fact that the Spanish lost the match, their team player Andres Villena was able to impress everyone by registering the highest number of points in the entire tournament. Villena posted 48 points in the match while the Serbian top scorer was Luka
Medic with 28 points.
