Serbian Basketball Club Bombarded with stones
The attacks on the players are nothing strange in the field of sport. One such unfortunate incident occurred in the central coastal town of Zadar, in which a bus carrying Partizan Belgrade basketball players was attacked with stones.
The team of Partizan Belgrade was in town to play against local KK Zadar club in an Adriatic league (NLB) match. The Adriatic league contains teams from Bosnia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Serbia. The Partizans were highly committed
to set a record by defeating the local team at their home ground; however, the Zadar Club won the match with just three points lead, 91-88.
The visiting team was expecting a great deal of hospitality from the local people, however, discouragingly they were been pelted with wounds and cuts.
After the game, the Serbian club’s players were being driven to the airport to catch a flight to Belgrade for their next match. The bus was on the way to the local airport, but they did not get too far as the bus went under attack when stones were thrown
at it from all directions.
One of the attackers managed to break the window of the bus and injured the Partizan Belgrade coach Vlada Jovanovic. Fortunately, the injuries were not serious, and Jovanovic was perfectly fit and healthy to coach the team for the Euro League game against
Prokom.
"When we left the arena the bus was hit with two stones. One broke the glass and hit Vlada Jovanovic in the face. Luckily it only grazed him, so his face is a little cut up and swollen," the current sports director of Partizan Belgrade, Dragan Todoric
said.
Meanwhile, such a shameful act has been strongly condemned by the Croatian club and the local team. The Croatian club showed deep concern, declaring the incident as
“uncivilized incident which harms Zadar basketball club but also both the town of Zadar and whole Croatia.”
The club’s leaders apologized to the visiting team and they assured full proof security for upcoming events, while at the same time the Zadar club demanded to hold an inquiry to expose the transgressors and to punish them in order to avoid such calamity.
