Serbian Davis Cup Team rallies to win their first title at the premier event
Not even an hour ago, Serbia’s Davis Cup team competed with France in an attempt to fight for their first ever Davis Cup title.
The Serbian team won their first ever title at the premier tennis event on Sunday, competing with France and emerging with a 3-2 victory upon Viktor Troicki’s defeat of Frenchman Michael Llodra with a score line of 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in the last and final singles
match of the event.
Viktor Troicki definitely rose to the occasion in the crucial fifth rubber against Llodra, who trains under former WTA player Amelie Mauresmo.
Earlier in the event World Number 3 Novak Djokovic tied the event, which is fought with a best-of-five system by defeating French Number 1 Gael Monfils in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the first reverse singles match of the Davis Cup. The match played by
Djokovic and his subsequent victory gave hope to his teammates, and it is very likely that this was a major motivation for Troicki’s victory.
Janko Tipsarevic was originally slated to play the final match, but after a miserable performance against Gael Monfils he was replaced by last minute intervention Viktor Troicki. Trociki put behind the bad memories left of his previous doubles match with
Nenad Zimonjic, and played the best tennis of his life to sum up a straight sets victory over his opponent, Llodra.
Troicki, who dropped to the court with jubilation after the victory while his teammates hugged each other, made fast progress during the match to earn his first set against Llodra in the Davis Cup’s final in only 38 minutes. He then put together 32 points,
and collected 71% of the points on the first serve.
In addition to this, he fired 10 winners across the court for a good start to the match. Llodra, who was having an extremely bad day, committed 22 errors against Troicki’s 15, which ended up making all the difference.
France had been leading 2-1 in the tournament after they won the doubles on Saturday. Had they won the Davis Cup this year, it would have been their tenth victory and the first one since 2001. The victory is an important one for Serbia, in addition to being
the first Davis Cup win it is exhilarating for the war-ravaged country to have an achievement to boost them.
