Serbs win against Italian Macerata in the Playoffs 12 – Men’s Volleyball
Serbian Bre Banca Lannutti CUNEO opened the Playoffs 12 of 2012 CEV Champions League by taking on Lube Banca Marche MACERATA of Italy.
The match was played on Wednesday, February 1 at the “Palasport Fontescodella” in Macerata, Italy. The home team could not perform up to the mark and suffered the loss of important match in straight sets.
The Serbs, on the other hand, displayed an incredible show of volleyball and defeated the Italian team on its home soil. They posted 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-22) win over Macerata and brightened their chances of getting a ticket to the Playoffs 6.
The weather created a bit of hitch for local fans to make it to the match venue. The city of Macerata experienced snow fall and had chillier weather on Wednesday evening, which forced most of the fans to watch the game on TV. The home squad obviously missed
the support of fans and failed to deal with the opponents.
The top gun of Serbia Vissotto Neves Leandro added match-high 17 points. Omrcen of Italy was second best scorer in the match with a total of 13 points. Serbian Ngapeth also went into double-digit score as he contributed 12 points.
The mentor of Serbian Bre Banca Lannutti, Camillo Placì regarded it as an important victory for qualification to the next round but he stressed that the team will have to give a flawless performance in the next match, which is scheduled to be played in the
next week. He urged his players to be prepared for a tough encounter.
Opening set of the match was all about the Serbian team as they picked up early lead and maintained it until the set points. Serbian Vissotto and Ngapeth developed a great chemistry between them and notched up consecutive points.
The Serbian team had a new setter in the form of Michele Baranowicz, who did an amazing job and played a vital role in the leading Serbia to success. Macerata lagged behind 3-6 at the first technical timeout and 15-19 at the second break. The visiting squad
did not allow the hosts to come up and claimed first set, 25-20.
Second set of the game turned into a heated competition as Italian side played to its full potential and tried to cover the deficit.
Nevertheless, the Serbs denied their efforts and did not give an easy time to Macerata. The score shifted up with close gap, while the game continued until the tie of scores at 24-all. The Italian side was locked at 24, whereas the Serbs seized second-set
win at 26-24.
With the confidence of two sets in hand, Serbs quickly covered the length of the third set and finished the game in straight sets.
