Seren Waters’ half-century guides Kenya to 135
Seren Waters’ resilient half-century for Kenya has guided his team to a comfortable position in the warm-up match of the ICC World Cup 2011 against Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo.
Waters has played a measured knock, scoring 65 runs off 106 deliveries. At the start of his innings, he was sedate in his approach, as he had to negate the new-ball effect. He remained calm and composed and left every delivery which was pitched outside his
off-stump, scoring his runs in ones and twos. However, he was severe on anything that was short of length and despatched six deliveries to the fence.
Earlier, Kenya won the toss and elected to bat first on a tricky wicket. The opening pair Seren and Alex Obanda played watchfully, as the track was offering a fair bit of movement to the seam bowlers.
In the process, Obanda fell for just 11 when Kenya were 21 for 1 in 5 overs. David Obuya and Seren then added 53 runs for the second wicket and took their team to 74 for 1.
Obuya worked hard for his 20 runs, but was not able to convert his start into something substantial. After his departure, Steve Tikolo came out with a positive intent, smashing a four off the first ball he faced, but gifted his wicket away by playing a loose
shot later.
Waters stood like a rock at the crease and added 42 runs for the next wicket with Maurice Ouma, taking his team total to 129 for 3 in 31 overs. However, Ouma was dismissed by Ryan ten Doeschate when he had scored 20 runs off 35 balls.
For Netherlands, Doeschate put up a determined bowling performance. The medium pacer moved the ball in the air consistently. His persistent bowling earned him figures of 2 for 32 in seven overs.
Berend Westdijk and Bernard Loots chipped in with a wicket apiece, and the rest of the bowlers kept things quiet at one end.
The Kenyan opening batsmen has to remain at the crease throughout the innings in order to set the opposition a challenging target. He would have to share a solid partnership with Rakep Patel to set a solid foundation for the late-order batsmen.
