Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki move into the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
American number one, Serena Williams survived a mid match lapse against Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai as she moved into the second round of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, 21st June. A four time champion here,
Serena took a little over ninety minutes as she secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over the French.
Starting slow in the opener, Serena allowed herself to be broken as she lagged 0-2 early on. However, bouncing back Serena held the French to two games as she herself reeled off five straight games to lead 5-2, before serving out
the set at 5-3 without losing a single point.
The set lasted almost 35 minutes, with Serena converting 100 percent breakpoint opportunities to her advantage and hitting four aces and eleven winners to go one up in the set score.
However, losing her footing in the second set, Serena had the tables turned on her as Rezai came out firing to upset the seventh seed, securing a 6-3 win for herself and levelling the set score.
With one set each the match entered the decider. However, this was all the leeway the American would allow the French. Fighting back long and hard, Serena completely dominated Rezai in the third set to secure a breadstick win for
herself and seal her spot here in the second round.
Serena moves on ahead to play Romanian Simona Halep. Halep practically sailed past Bojana Jovanovski, as she secured a 6-2, 6-1 win in her opening round match.
Also moving ahead today was the top seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki. The world number one without a Grand Slam win, Wozniacki started her bid here at the third Grand Slam of the event after securing an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory against
Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja.
Taking less than an hour, Wozniacki hit two aces and eleven winners; converted 5 of 10 breakpoint opportunities and capitalised on the Spaniard’s 15 unforced errors to sail into the second round here.
In her bid for a maiden Grand Slam win, Wozniacki next faces Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano. Razzano did away with Indian Sania Mirza in three tight sets to move ahead at the event.
