Serena Williams, Roberta Vinci and Julia Goerges rise in world rankings – Tennis News
Former world number one, Serena Williams, has risen to the third spot according the latest edition of the Women Tennis Association rankings list issued on Monday. She has driven out the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, out
of the Top-3 category after a disastrous run from the 23-year-old Pole at the China Open where she failed to retain the title; falling in the quarter-finals to the seventh seed Chinese woman, Li Na. Williams didn’t participate in the event but Radwanska couldn’t
save all points from the last year triumph and dropped a slot below to number four in the world.
Top seed superstar, Victoria Azarenka, manhandled the second ranked Russian blonde, Maria Sharapova, to claim the title at Beijing and cemented her position at number one with Sharapova continuing to press hard to claim that spot
after losing it out at the Wimbledon Championships. So, the Top-2 slots in the Women Tennis Association are unchanged.
After an impressive run at Beijing, Li Na moved on to the seventh place in the world rankings displacing the Italian star, Sara Errani, who sinks to the eighth spot in the latest edition of rankings. Li overpowered Radwanska in
the quarters to dethrone the Pole but couldn’t handle the sublime onslaught of Sharapova in the next clash.
Other movers in the Top-20 category include Roberta Vinci of Italy who rose to the 15th place in the rankings; forcing the Russian superstar, Maria Kirilenko, to drop one place. German diva, Julia Goerges, had an impressive
tour of Beijing where she outplayed the former US Open Champion, Samantha Stosur, in the second round before falling out in a close clash against the 10th ranked Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli.
Goerges breaks into the Top-20 players list for the third time in the season and holds the 19th rank in the work; forcing the American star, Varvara Lepchenko, to the 20th spot and pushed Ekaterina Makarova
out of the Top-20’s list. It has been an eventful year for all the women stars witnessing a lot of shift in rankings throughout the season. Now, it’s time for the season-end finale that begins on October 23rd in Istanbul.
